Demand Generation recruitment

Demand generation marketers own pipeline creation. They combine paid media, ABM, content, events and nurture to deliver qualified opportunities, and they're increasingly measured on pipeline and revenue rather than MQLs.

The role

What the job really covers

Demand generation is the B2B marketing function that creates qualified sales pipeline, by building awareness and intent in the target market and converting it into sales conversations, using channels such as paid media, content, events, account-based marketing (ABM), webinars and partners.

  • Planning integrated campaigns against a pipeline target agreed with Sales
  • Running paid search, paid social and programmatic with clear CAC and payback goals
  • ABM programmes for named accounts, aligned to sales territories
  • Reporting attribution and pipeline contribution with RevOps

Titles we recruit

  • Demand Gen Manager
  • Paid Media Manager
  • ABM Manager
  • Campaigns Manager
  • Field & Events Marketing
  • Head of Demand Generation
  • Director of Pipeline Marketing

What we assess, and how

Every shortlist comes with notes on all four
  1. 01

    Pipeline literacy

Can they explain sourced versus influenced pipeline and defend their attribution model?
  2. 02

    Budget ownership

What they spent, where they moved it and why.
  3. 03

    Sales alignment

How they agree targets and service-level agreements with Sales leaders, and what happens when they're missed.
  4. 04

    Experiment design

A test they ran, how they measured it, and what they stopped doing because of it.

A question we always ask

“What share of last year's closed-won revenue did marketing source, and how do you know?”
It shows whether they think in revenue, and whether their numbers would survive the CFO.

Market notes

UK demand gen roles often cover all of EMEA, with field events and partner marketing folded in. Localisation for DACH and France comes up often.

UK demand gen roles are concentrated in London, with active B2B SaaS marketing communities in Manchester, Bristol, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Many UK roles cover EMEA, so experience with multi-country campaigns, localisation and GDPR / PECR consent rules for marketing is valued. Hybrid working is standard.

IT Jobs Watch reports a London demand generation median of £70k for the six months to October 2026 (25th–75th percentile £51k–£86k), up 27% year on year, though the sample is small (31 salaries). Robert Half's Greater London digital marketing manager range (£54k–£87k) is consistent.

US teams are larger and more specialised, with separate paid, ABM and lifecycle roles. Pipeline targets are usually agreed each quarter with the CRO.

US demand gen teams are often larger and more specialised, with separate campaign, channel, ABM and ops roles. Hubs include the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Boston, Austin and Denver, and remote roles are common. US roles often manage larger paid budgets and work with state privacy rules such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA / CPRA).

Robert Half's demand generation manager bands run from $121k–$171k in San Jose and $125k–$177k in New York, against a national band of $92k–$130k.

What demand generation does in a SaaS company

Demand generation sits between brand awareness and closed revenue. A demand gen team plans and runs the programmes that bring the right buyers into the funnel and convert them into meetings and opportunities for sales: integrated campaigns, paid search and social, content and webinars, field events, ABM programmes and partner marketing. In most SaaS companies the team is measured on marketing-sourced and marketing-influenced pipeline, and increasingly on revenue.

The function has shifted from lead generation to demand creation. A decade ago many teams were judged on the number of marketing qualified leads (MQLs), which often meant gated content and contact lists that sales ignored. Today, strong teams focus on reaching the buying group in target accounts, creating genuine interest, and capturing demand when buyers are ready, with fewer but better hand-offs to sales.

Demand gen marketers need to be both creative and analytical. They write or brief campaigns that cut through, choose the right channels for a specific audience, and manage budgets against return. They also need to work closely with sales and sales development, because pipeline is a shared goal and the hand-off between marketing and sales is where most of it leaks.

  • Plan and run integrated campaigns against pipeline targets
  • Manage paid search, paid social and programmatic budgets
  • Run ABM programmes with sales for target accounts
  • Deliver webinars, events and content programmes that convert
  • Report on pipeline contribution, CAC and channel ROI

Roles we recruit

We recruit across demand generation: demand gen and campaign managers, ABM managers, paid media and performance marketers, field and event marketers, partner marketers, marketing operations managers, and heads or directors of demand generation.

Titles vary. “Demand generation manager”, “growth marketing manager” (in B2B), “pipeline marketing manager” and “integrated campaigns manager” can describe very similar jobs. In the UK, “digital marketing manager” is sometimes used for roles that are really demand gen. In the US, larger teams separate campaign, channel, ABM and ops roles more clearly. We look at what the person will actually own before mapping the market.

Marketing operations is often part of, or close to, demand generation. Marketing ops people run the marketing automation platform, lead scoring and routing, attribution and data hygiene. Without them, demand gen cannot prove what works. We recruit marketing ops alongside demand gen and RevOps.

  • Demand generation and integrated campaign managers
  • ABM managers and account-based programme leads
  • Paid media and performance marketing managers
  • Field, event and partner marketing managers
  • Marketing operations managers and heads of demand generation

Metrics that show a demand gen marketer is good

Pipeline is the core metric. We ask candidates how much marketing-sourced pipeline their programmes generated, how that compared with target, how it converted to closed-won revenue, and what the cost was per opportunity. Strong candidates know these numbers without having to look them up.

We also ask how they define and measure attribution. There is no perfect model, and candidates who claim one are usually overselling. The best demand gen marketers combine data from the CRM and marketing automation platform with self-reported attribution (“how did you hear about us?”), sales feedback and incrementality tests to make sensible decisions about where to spend.

Efficiency matters as budgets tighten. We look at customer acquisition cost, cost per opportunity by channel, conversion rates through the funnel (from engaged account or MQL to meeting, opportunity and win) and how quickly they cut programmes that were not working.

  • Marketing-sourced and influenced pipeline versus target
  • Pipeline-to-revenue conversion and win rate
  • Cost per opportunity and CAC by channel
  • Funnel conversion rates and velocity
  • Evidence of reallocating budget based on results

Skills and tools employers are hiring for in 2026

The core platforms are a marketing automation tool (HubSpot or Marketo, sometimes Pardot / Marketing Cloud Account Engagement), the CRM (Salesforce or HubSpot), ad platforms (LinkedIn Ads, Google Ads, Meta and programmatic), and analytics such as GA4. ABM roles often add 6sense, Demandbase or similar intent and account platforms, plus enrichment tools such as Clearbit, ZoomInfo or Clay.

Beyond tools, employers want commercial thinking. Can the candidate build a pipeline plan backwards from the revenue target? Can they explain why a channel works for a specific audience? Can they write or brief a message that a busy buyer will actually read? We test these in interview.

AI has changed the day-to-day. Demand gen teams now use AI for content drafts, personalisation, ad testing and analysis. That makes judgement and taste more valuable, not less: the marketers who stand out know what good looks like and can tell when a campaign is generic.

  • HubSpot, Marketo or Marketing Cloud Account Engagement
  • LinkedIn Ads, Google Ads and programmatic
  • ABM platforms: 6sense, Demandbase
  • Attribution and analytics: GA4, CRM reporting, Dreamdata or HockeyStack
  • Clay and enrichment for targeting and personalisation

How we run a demand generation search

We start by understanding your go-to-market motion: who you sell to, average deal size, sales cycle, current pipeline sources, budget, the tech stack and how marketing and sales work together today. The right demand gen hire for a product-led company selling to developers is very different from one for an enterprise sales-led company selling to CFOs.

We then look for candidates who have succeeded in a similar motion and at a similar stage. A demand gen leader who ran a large team with a big budget may not thrive with a small budget and no marketing ops support. We test for stage fit, channel expertise and the ability to work across functions.

Shortlists come with notes on each candidate’s pipeline record, channel strengths, tool experience and our view on fit. We recommend a short take-home or live exercise: for example, a 90-day pipeline plan for one of your target segments.

  • Discovery on ICP, ACV, cycle, budget and stack
  • Market map by motion (PLG, sales-led, ABM) and stage
  • Screen for pipeline record, channel depth and commercial thinking
  • Shortlist of three to five with detailed notes
  • Suggested exercise: a 90-day pipeline plan

Interview questions for demand gen roles

Questions that work well include: “Walk me through your pipeline contribution last year: target, actual, conversion to revenue and cost”; “Tell me about a programme you stopped: how did you know it was not working?”; “How did you work with the SDR team to follow up on campaign responses?”; and “If you had half the budget next quarter, what would you cut first and why?”

For ABM roles, ask how they selected target accounts, how they coordinated with sales on plays, and how they measured engagement and progress in those accounts. For paid media roles, ask about bidding strategy, creative testing, audience building and how they measured incrementality.

Look for honesty about attribution and about failures. Candidates who say every programme worked are either not measuring properly or not telling you the full story.

  • Pipeline contribution versus target, with cost
  • A programme they stopped, and why
  • How they work with SDRs and sales
  • Budget prioritisation under constraint
  • ABM account selection and measurement

Career paths in demand generation

Many demand gen marketers start in campaign, digital or marketing ops roles, become demand gen managers, then senior managers and heads of demand gen. From there the path leads to VP of marketing or CMO, because pipeline ownership is central to most B2B marketing leadership roles.

Others specialise: in ABM, in paid media, in marketing operations, or in partner and field marketing. Specialists are in steady demand, especially those with strong technical skills in automation, data and attribution.

Some move into revenue operations or growth roles, where their understanding of funnel data and systems is valuable, or into product marketing to work closer to positioning and launches.

  • Campaign or digital marketer → Demand gen manager → Head of demand gen
  • Head of demand gen → VP Marketing → CMO
  • Demand gen → ABM or paid media specialist
  • Demand gen → Marketing operations → RevOps
  • Demand gen → Growth or product marketing

Demand generation terms explained

Marketing and sales teams often use the same words to mean different things. Agreeing definitions is one of the first things a new demand gen hire does, and one of the first things we check at the brief.

Pay particular attention to how pipeline is attributed. Some companies credit marketing only when it created the first touch; others credit any campaign that touched the account before an opportunity was created. Both are valid, but candidates’ numbers need to be read against the right one.

These are the terms we use most when we assess demand generation candidates.

  • MQL (marketing qualified lead): a lead that meets agreed criteria for sales follow-up
  • Marketing-sourced pipeline: opportunities where marketing created the first meaningful engagement
  • Marketing-influenced pipeline: opportunities where marketing activity touched the account before or during the deal
  • Intent data: signals that an account is researching a relevant topic
  • Self-reported attribution: what buyers say brought them to you, captured on forms or in calls
For employers

Our advice before you hire

Give demand gen a pipeline number and a budget at the same time. Asking for pipeline growth without the spend or tools to deliver it is the most common reason these hires leave in year one.
